Committed to Net Zero

Written by Communications | 29 Jun 2023

Since we announced our commitment to Net Zero in June last year, we have been taking steps across the business to address our environmental impact and protect our natural environment for future generations.

“Net Zero” refers to a target of completely offsetting the amount of greenhouse gases we produce. This can be achieved by reducing emissions, most of which come from the burning of fossil fuels, and by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

By transitioning to net zero emissions and creating more sustainable solutions, we are playing a part in responding to the risks of climate change and ensuring we are adapting for a low-carbon future.

To help us on our environmental journey, we have developed an Emissions and Energy Reduction Roadmap which outlines our approach based on three scopes: direct emissions within our operational control, indirect emissions that we own and indirect emissions owned by others.

Rebecca Voyer, Environmental Lead at Monadelphous, said in the first stage of our Roadmap, we have established a target of 20 to 40 per cent reduction in our scope 1 and 2 absolute emissions by 2030.

“Further to our reduction target, we will continue to support our customers in pursuing net zero emissions and find ways to reduce emissions on our customers’ sites,” Rebecca said.

Since launching our Roadmap, we have begun implementing changes such as switching to hybrid vehicles instead of diesel vehicles, shifting to solar photovoltaic (PV) installations for our owned commercial and residential properties and trialing solar PV and battery-operated power supplies.

What can you do?

At work or at home, there are many things you can do to reduce your own carbon footprint. Here are some top tips to get started:

  • Recycle materials
  • Use reusable containers instead of single-use plastics
  • Compost your food waste
  • Make energy-smart decisions
  • Volunteer to clean up the local community and help with planting initiatives
  • Consider solar and / or purchasing renewable power from your main supply
