Through the National Association of Women in Operations (NAWO)’s Gender Equity Men (GEM) Program, Dylan Ogilvie explored what it means to be an effective ally, challenge bias and help create workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. As one of Australia's leading networks supporting women in operations, NAWO launched the GEM Program in 2024 to help men become stronger allies and advocates for gender equity in their workplaces. Through mentoring sessions and practical discussions, participants explore how to be effective allies, challenge unconscious bias, intervene when inappropriate behaviour occurs, and address the systemic barriers that can limit opportunities for women in industry. Dylan said that the program highlighted the value of engaging men as active partners in advancing gender equity and turning awareness into action. “What I found particularly valuable was the diversity of the cohort - bringing together participants from industries such as food, transport, construction, mining and government created opportunities for a different set of eyes and open discussions,” Dylan said. “While our workplaces and challenges were often quite different, there were common themes that emerged throughout the program, making the discussions richer and challenging me to think about issues from angles I hadn't considered before.” Dylan said he walked away from the GEM Program with a greater appreciation of the influence we all have in shaping workplace culture. “The program challenged me to think differently, listen more carefully, reflect on what we are doing well and reflect on the ways that seemingly small decisions and behaviours can either create opportunities or unintentionally reinforce barriers,” he said. Melchor has been participating in a range of courses offered through NAWO. Currently seven people from their management team are participating in their Inclusion Habits for Operations Leaders course. The Inclusion Habits for Operations Leaders program is designed to help leaders build more inclusive teams through practical, everyday behaviours. It focuses on understanding bias, having better conversations, and creating workplace environments where people feel valued, supported, and able to contribute.
