We caught up with 2022 apprentice of the year runner up, Sapphire Bengiler, to learn about her experience as an apprentice boilermaker and what motivates her.
Sapphire was in school when she was first exposed to welding - she could never imagine herself sitting in an office all day and instantly loved how hands on welding was - so pursuing a career as a boilermaker, seemed like the right move.
She is now four years into her apprenticeship, and has already worked on some of our most exciting construction projects, including West Angelas, Iron Bridge and Greenbushes.
When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Sapphire said she loves that she’s always learning.
“The team is supportive in giving me exposure to new tasks and helping me take on the tough jobs. We always have each other’s backs, which is a nice environment to learn in.”
Over the last few years, Sapphire has continued to push herself to reach her goals. Last year, that work paid off as she was named runner-up young trades person of the year by Weld Australia
“I’m proud of the way I work and everything I have achieved so far. It isn’t always easy, but I challenge myself. I want to prove that I can work just as hard as anyone else, and I always tell myself that if they can do it, I can too. It’s nice to have all that hard work pay off when you get recognised with an award.”
On her last project, Sapphire was also awarded at Tinny Time for always going above and beyond and promoting a positive safety culture on site.
“I’ve really enjoyed working in the industry. I actually think working fly-in-fly-out has helped me to be in a good mental space, it has a lot to do with the support network and team on the project. Everyone is willing to listen and help you out," she finished.
Sapphire is always on the hunt for her next challenge and wouldn’t rule out trying a different trade. When she’s not at work, Sapphire switches to explore mode, whether that’s offroad driving, camping or fishing.
Her favourite spot is Bremer Bay, where she will pull up a swag with her partner and enjoy all that it has to offer. Next on her list is heading up the coast of Western Australia to Coral Bay, where she would love to snorkel and check out the marine life.
