Cleaning up a safety hotspot

Written by Communications | 31 Mar 2023

Our team at BHP’s Mount Arthur open-cut coal mine in the Hunter region of NSW have recently risen to a customer challenge, helping to deliver safety improvements.

A safety hotspot identified by the customer was their on-site cleaning, which takes place in high-risk areas and involves a significant amount of manual handling, as well as interaction with mining equipment.

Our maintenance team instated a team of 30 cleaners who take the same approach to safety that is applied across all Monadelphous operations. Site Manager Chris Sciacca was instrumental in setting up the team for success

Operations Manager – NSW, Greg Walker said that the team’s safety focus is consistent with all of our on-site work and this is already making a substantial difference.

“Our cleaning team at Mount Arthur has done an exceptional job working together and adapting to what is a very unique industry and working environment,” he said.

“The team have really stepped up and embraced our safety standards and culture, ensuring cleaning work is undertaken safely and without incident.

“Special mention to Site Manager Chris Sciacca, who has played an instrumental role in setting up the team to deliver for the customer and guiding them to success.

“We now have in place a dedicated cleaning crew working 24 / 7 and this approach has been a great success, achieving improved safety outcomes and earning positive feedback from BHP.

“It is a great example of teamwork as it is also with the support of the wider team, as well as leadership engagement and supervision, that the team have been able to achieve these results.”

Congratulations to the Mount Arthur team for working together to address a challenge, adapt quickly and deliver a solution.
