On their most recent shutdown our Mackay team pooled their efforts by selling food and drinks to raise more than $1,400 dollars for a great cause.

ManUp! – a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to boosting education and awareness about prostate cancer – was the beneficiary, chosen because the disease has impacted on colleagues.

The charity was established in 2010 by Brian and Jill Costello after Brian was diagnosed with prostate cancer and the couple identified a need for easier access to information, support and hands-on help. They were also determined to help create awareness about early detection and testing, particularly in regional and remote communities.

Jill now runs ManUp! with her daughter Leah and said that, over the past three years, more than 89 people have been diagnosed with prostate cancer as a result of taking action following their information sessions.

Manager Anthony Prestipino said that it is important for the team to give back to the community through causes like this, which is why the team usually hold fundraisers during shutdowns.

“The shuts we do can be hard work – but things like this ensure that we leave our community a better place as the dragline goes back to work and we move on to the next site,” he said.

The team’s last fundraiser was during another major shut, DRE11, when they raised an incredible $5,101.50 for Beyond Blue.  Now with DRE026 coming up, they are currently choosing the next charity to receive their support.
