Mackay workshop shines bright with solar and sustainability milestones

Written by Communications | 29 Apr 2025

The Mackay Workshop has taken a significant step toward sustainability with the installation of a 40 kW solar power system, consisting of 94 high-efficiency 425-watt panels.

This solar setup is projected to generate annual electricity savings of up to $12,000 and account for up to 78 per cent of the workshop’s total electricity consumption.

Monadelphous has partnered with Tindo Solar, an Australian company who manufactures their solar panels in Australia, to support the Group-led renewable power solar installation program on selected owned properties as part of our Net Zero strategy.

The system went live on 19 January 2025 and in the first weeks of operation there was an average of 26 percent of the power generated by the system being used in the workshop (self-consumption), with the balance exported to the grid.

The workshop uses power supplied during the day by the system, which accounts for around 53 percent of the total power required, with the remaining 47 percent currently being supplied by the grid when the system is not active (i.e. overnight). We look forward to monitoring the usage and the benefits achieved.

Coming off the back of the Mackay Workshop being the first in Monadelphous to introduce hybrid vehicles, it has now become the first Eastern Region Monadelphous owned facility to have solar power supply.

Glen Lacey, Mackay Shutdown Manager, shared his thoughts on this achievement,

"This is a great initiative with a measurable return on investment for the business and an immediate reduction in emissions,” Glen said.

“We’ve now achieved 100 percent LED lighting across the facility, which enhances greater self-consumption of power provided by the solar panels due to improved energy-efficient operations. It’s a win for sustainability, efficiency, and the environment."

The combination of hybrid vehicles, energy-efficient lighting, and now solar power demonstrates Mackay Workshop’s leadership in adopting environmentally friendly practices. These efforts set a benchmark for other branches to follow and contribute to Monadelphous' broader commitment to sustainability.

Stay tuned as the Mackay Workshop continues to pave the way toward a greener future!
