It’s been a labour of love for two years but Monos’ Lihir facility, Molondo, is here to stay.
Working with local landowners and the customer, the PNG team has been working tirelessly to establish an operational base in Londolovit Township, a five-minute drive from camp and a 30-minute drive to site.
But where did the name Molondo come from? While the facility was being established, the team had a naming competition – with Molondo emerging triumphant, a hybrid of Monos and Londolovit.
Beyond establishing a physical base, the PNG team focused on creating opportunities for the local community. Working closely with PNG’s National Apprenticeship and Trade Testing Board (NATTB), Molondo was approved to host apprentices, ensuring the facility meets national standards.
This partnership has already seen the first cohort of apprentices join the program.
Among them are Oscar and Charlie, two proud PNG nationals eager to build their careers.
“I enrolled as a TA with Monadelphous in 2019, and I have put a lot of effort into the field as a TA, assisting the tradies,” Oscar said.
“It is like a dream come true to be selected to do my apprenticeship as a boilermaker – I am very happy and appreciate this wonderful opportunity that awaits me.”
Monos’ remains committed to investing in local talent and nationalising the workforce.
Through the apprenticeship program, we’re not only helping young people gain valuable trade qualifications but also building a strong foundation of skilled resources for the future.
