When we received a letter from one of our Papua New Guinea-based mechanics to support a school in his local village, we got into gear.
After receiving the request in mid-2024, Monadelphous agreed to donate building materials and school supplies that would significantly assist Kei Point School. Everything from plywood for desks to water tanks and whiteboards was supplied, alongside books, general stationary, and building consumables.
“The purpose of the project was to provide a local PNG school with materials to help them support the education of the future generations in their village,” Project Manager Ethan Oxford said.
“The village is a community on an island in the middle of Lake Kutubu which is a 10-minute boat ride from the airport we all fly into.”
Over the next few months, Monos arranged for the materials and had them shipped to site – no small feat, as boats were needed for delivery. Once all materials had arrived, we liaised with our mechanic and the village to organise the material handover.
“The biggest milestone was getting the materials to the village. The donations were loaded off our HIAB and onto several boats which were used to get the materials to the island,” Site Manager John said.
Upon arrival, the team was greeted with a traditional welcoming ceremony, a heartfelt gesture from the community to show their gratitude.
“We were welcomed by a traditional celebration ceremony where the village members were dressed up in the traditional clothing. Local PNG food was also passed around as a final act of gratitude,” John recalled.
For the PNG team, being able to support the local village and the education of future generations has been priceless – the impact of the support being visible almost immediately, with newly constructed desks and tanks installed shortly after materials were received.
Monadelphous continues to be committed to supporting its local workforce and ensuring we leave a positive legacy in the regions where we live and work.
