Meet Indigenous Pathways Program participant, Brett Weeks

We sat down recently with Indigenous pathways program participant Brett Weeks to get to know him. Brett spoke about his journey with Monadelphous and the opportunities he’s had with us so far.

How long have you worked at Monadelphous for and in what roles?

I started here in 2020, so have worked for Monos for nearly two years.

I began as a Storeman at South Flank, so I was in charge of handing out tools and that kind of thing.  From there, I moved into a Telehandler role, operating forklifts at South Flank. I am now Crane Operator Trainee, completing a Cert III in Mobile Crane Operations.

How did you begin working at Monadelphous?

I met Matt Macfarlane through the Carey Bindjareb Program, and after meeting with him, they reached out to me an offered me a role. I knew Cameron Widen who already worked for Monos, and he helped me through the recruitment process.

What role are you in now / what is the Indigenous Pathways Program offering?

I am currently a Crane Operator Trainee, completing a Cert III in mobile Crane Operations in the Heavy Lift division and am also part of the Indigenous Pathways Program.

Being part of the Program gives me access to mentoring and upskilling opportunities. The opportunity to be part of the Pathways Program came about through Cameron; he put my name forward and Claudia from the program reached out to me.

How has the program helped you?

Being a trainee and part of the pathways program has been really helpful for my career and personal life. The Program Team are always communicating with me, letting me know what coming up and what’s available. I have a great mentor who I am in contact with all time.

When I first heard about the program, I was a bit hesitant to participate as it was quite daunting – I am not a big fan of change. However, it has opened up a range of new options for me that I never thought were possible. I have gained various other tickets, which have opened a whole new career path for me.  

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

Being a trainee has given me a range of new skills which are setting me up for the future. There are a lot of diverse elements involved in completing a Cert III which keeps things interesting. I also really enjoy the people that I work with.

Do you have any advice for someone who is considering joining the Indigenous Pathways Program?

Put your fears aside and give it go. It’s never too late to change your life around. I am 42 and didn’t think I would be where I am today, I am really grateful for that.
