They say when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. A very fitting motto for our Senior Project Engineer for Heavy Lift, Joseph Wong.
This month we sat down with Joe to chat about his journey so far and what the future ahead looks like.
“I moved to Monadelphous three years ago after having worked alongside them in a previous role. I saw the way the team worked together, communicated and grew together as a team which was something I wanted to be part of. Shortly after, I started at Monadelphous in the Heavy Lift team.
My role here has developed over the years, which gives me the ability to bring people together to achieve a common goal. This is such a powerful part of my role, and I’ve found that out of these opportunities comes significant development for both myself and the team.
A driver for me personally and professional has always been having the ability to see the big picture and understanding how that can be achieved. For me, I believe “people” are the fundamental building block to any project success which I see again and again on Monadelphous projects.
Another exciting part of my role is spending time on site, it’s unlike many working environments. Onsite, we work 13 hour shifts every day, which builds a strong and reliable team. Sometimes it might take four days to achieve, sometimes it might take 35, but either way the project gets completed and the team dynamic grows. Upon a project completion I feel as though I walk away with new relationships, experiences and lessons learnt. One of these projects even gave me the opportunity to fly to America for a four day engineering conference as a recognition of the work I’d done.
Since I’ve been with Monadelphous I’ve worked solely on the Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) Crane Services project as the Project Engineer. This has allowed me to grow and develop, taking on more and more responsibility. Stepping up and managing the relationships, different stakeholders and on different sites has been such a learning experience.
When I’m not working, I’m passionate about playing musical instruments and my Christian faith. The two passions coupled together has seen me playing keyboard and bass in my local church band since I was 13 – which is close to 16 years now. This is definitely the longest commitment I’ve had to one thing.
My dream weekend would definitely be camping at Fonty’s Pool with my wife, and hitting the beach in a 4×4. I just need to get the 4×4 first!
If one of my friends was thinking about joining the industry, I’d tell them to do it and get involved! It’s a massive industry with incredible scope and revenue. From my own experience, I’ve found this industry to be such a community, where everyone knows everyone. So, if you are keen to be involved make sure you put your best foot forward for all opportunities that come your way.
