How can we make a step change in productivity whilst also reducing the carbon footprint of construction projects? We are looking for your ideas, your out of the box thinking, to rethink how we execute projects to increase both productivity and reduce our carbon footprint.

We are not talking about incremental improvements – we are looking to move the needle, not just nudge it!

WHAT CHANGED?

Over time, productivity on many construction projects has significantly declined, taking more hours per tonne to complete. This decline is in the magnitude of 225%, with a subsequent increase in average construction costs of up to 300%, meaning it is costing more to get less done!

Whilst opportunities to leverage renewable energy has been a topic of conversation for some time, the need to address climate change has rapidly escalated, with Monadelphous, along with many of our customers, committing to achieving Net Zero by 2050. Up to 70% of the carbon emissions associated with construction work are derived from operational activities.

Productivity and carbon emissions go hand-in-hand; more hours required to complete a construction project typically means more people on site, resulting in higher carbon emissions.

HOW CAN YOU HELP TURN THE DIAL?

Einstein once said, “logic will get you from A to B, imagination will take you everywhere”. This is an opportunity to re-think how construction projects are executed.

Reimagining how work gets done to make a step change in productivity and the carbon footprint of construction projects requires ‘out of the box’ thinkers; people who are not constrained by the way things have always been done. This is where you come in!

We are looking for the most impactful, game changing ideas. Ideas could relate to a specific project phase (e.g., mobilisation, execution, completions), or might entail the use technology, process improvements to reduce down-time, changes to where work is performed or how tasks are undertaken. However, all ideas should be specific, tangible and make a measurable difference in productivity and/or our carbon footprint.
