In Karratha, a group of dedicated community members is working to create exactly that through the Pilbara Community Men's Shed. The not-for-profit organisation was established to provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive space where people, particularly men, can connect, share skills and work on meaningful projects. With a focus on reducing social isolation and supporting positive mental health, the Men's Shed aims to create opportunities for friendship, purpose and participation across the community. Now, the organisation is reaching an exciting milestone. Pilbara Community Men's Shed Treasurer Matthew Byrne said the group recently received approval from the City of Karratha for its block of land, marking an important step towards bringing the vision to life. "The Men’s Shed was established to address the growing need for social connection, practical activities and mental health support within the community," he said. "This is particularly important for people who may experience isolation due to FIFO work, retirement or limited local support networks." Through the Monadelphous Community Grants Program, we were proud to support the Pilbara Community Men's Shed with funding to install secure perimeter fencing at its new site. Matthew said that, while it may seem like a simple addition, the fencing plays a critical role in progressing the project. "The fencing is the first step that allows us to safely store equipment, begin site works and move towards construction," he said. "Without it, we cannot activate the site or start building the Men’s Shed. "The grant has reduced financial pressure on our small not-for-profit organisation and helped accelerate the development of the project." Once completed, the Men's Shed will become a vibrant community hub offering a range of activities and opportunities designed to strengthen wellbeing and social connection. Members will be able to participate in hands-on projects, woodworking, metalworking, skill-building workshops, volunteering opportunities and wellbeing-focused programs. Matthew said these activities create opportunities for people to learn, contribute and build meaningful relationships. "They provide a place where people can connect, develop new skills and find a sense of purpose while helping strengthen community ties across Karratha," he said. Like many community organisations, volunteers are central to the Men's Shed's success. Matthew said members contribute their time, experience and knowledge to support projects, maintain the facility and help deliver activities, creating a strong sense of ownership and pride. "Community partnerships and volunteer support allow us to offer more programs, support local organisations and keep the shed accessible for everyone," he said. "That collective effort helps ensure the Men's Shed remains a valued, community-led space for years to come." Looking ahead, Matthew hopes the Men's Shed will become a place where people feel welcomed, supported and connected. "We want it to be somewhere people can learn new skills, build friendships and feel a genuine sense of belonging," he said. "Monadelphous' support has been hugely important because it helps us get the site up and running sooner and brings the whole project one step closer to reality."
