Meet Sophia, who started her career as a trade assistant straight out of high school without a clear career path in mind. But that didn't stop her as she quickly gained valuable skills and discovered her passion for electrical work.
"I started in the industry as a trade assistant when I was 18 doing shutdowns. I came into the industry young with little experience, not knowing what career path I wanted to take," Sophia said.
"I was quickly taught such a wide range of important skills and thoroughly enjoyed learning about all different trades, especially electrical, which led me to where I am now."
Sophia joined Monadelphous as a Trade Assistant for the Southwest Maintenance Team in 2022 and transitioned into her new role as an Electrical Apprentice within the Engineering Construction division in 2024.
What Sophia enjoys most about her role is the daily challenge of acquiring new skills and the opportunity to work alongside seasoned tradespeople.
"I really enjoy challenging myself to learn new skills every day and working with so many different experienced tradespeople to gain knowledge from," she mentioned.
Sophia moved to Australia in 2011 with her parents and two younger sisters.
"We have always been a close family, and they are all my biggest supporters," Sophia shared.
"My dad is an electrician and has always inspired me.
"I am so grateful to live in Australia and love spending time at the beach as much as possible; I love seeing live music with my friends and staying active."
When advising others to pursue a career in the industry, Sophia highlights the numerous pathways and opportunities available.
"I would recommend people to join the industry because there are so many diverse pathways and opportunities tailored for every person," she emphasised.
"I have been supported well throughout my career and would love to see more young women in the industry," she added.
Looking ahead, Sophia's primary goal is to complete her apprenticeship and become a qualified electrician, which would mark a significant milestone in her career.
"Finishing my apprenticeship is my number one goal, and becoming a qualified electrician will be a huge accomplishment for me," she explained.
She also dreams of travelling to new countries, experiencing different cultures, and working abroad.
