Projects Mongolia Rio Tinto
1 Minute Read

In what was a momentous occasion, Rio Tinto’s Oyu Tolgoi (OT) copper mine in Mongolia celebrated the commencement of underground production – having been involved on the OT project since 2017 it was a shared proud moment for the Monadelphous team.

Recently, General Manager Electrical & Instrumentation and International Projects Damien Johnson visited the site and congratulated the team on being part of the delivery of this milestone.

“We’re proud to be part of this significant project and contribute to the successful development of this underground mine,” Damien said.

“It was fantastic to visit Mongolia and spend time with the team at both Ulaanbaatar and Oyu Tolgoi and see firsthand the dedication and hard work put forth by the team particularly in below freezing temperatures.”

“We are building momentum in the construction phase of the project and the team are working diligently alongside other contractors and stakeholders onsite to safely deliver a quality outcome,” he said.

Oyu Tolgoi is expected to produce around 500,000 tonnes of copper per year on average from 2028 to 2036 from the open pit and underground, contributing to the growing demand for copper in the global market.

Well done to all involved for achieving this important milestone. We look forward to sharing more about the project as it progresses.
