It has been a busy couple of months for Nic Hearne, who was recently promoted to Senior Project Engineer, just ticked over five years at Monos and recently demobilised from Iron Bridge where he has been based for the past eight months.
We caught up with Nic to find out what these milestones mean to him and what’s next for this experience-hungry engineer.
Nic was always drawn to our industry and first pursued mechanical engineering as his preferred discipline, but changed his mind after completing his first year of university.
“I thought electrical engineering was extremely interesting and saw the number of industries I could get involved with: mining, oil and gas, power generation, infrastructure, renewable energy and the list goes on. Joining the resources industry, specifically construction, was a goal of mine, as I believed it would provide me with the best possible practical knowledge to develop my skills,” said Nic.
Over the last five years, Nic has been involved in some of the largest construction projects on our books. He started on the vacation program with us up at Darwin on Ichthys. From there, he worked on multiple sites across the Pilbara. During that time, he got his Graduate passport signed off and gained experience to progress into a senior role.
“My favourite project so far has been the West Angelas C&D Project. It consisted of a series of complex shutdowns and greenfield works, which required a lot of pre-work and effective planning. I learnt a lot on that project and was able to work alongside experienced people in the industry.”
When reflecting on his time at Monadelphous, Nic explains how important it is to have team synergy and how our people make all the difference when it comes to project delivery.
“I have enjoyed the people I work with and the culture we promote. I specifically like working as a team to achieve a common goal, and I have fortunately been involved in multiple projects and teams where we have come together and successfully delivered.”
Looking forward, Nic is keen for his next challenge. After a couple of iron ore projects under his belt, within the next few years, he'd like to gain experience and expand his knowledge in other sectors too, such as lithium and rare earths projects. Nic shared the best piece of advice he was given that he will take to every job he works on:
“It’s important to understand every single detail about the project or work area you are responsible for. Understanding the detail will help with effective planning, problem-solving, cost savings and, ultimately, project execution,” he finishes.
When Nic isn't on site, he enjoys being active and spending time outside. He is a passionate Dockers supporter and loves adventure, always researching his next camping destination or holiday spot.
Thanks Nic for your five years of service – here’s to five more!
