For Latina Cagney, a fourth-year dual-trade Electrical and Instrumentation apprentice, giving back to her community is second nature.
Her commitment to volunteering began during her school years in Darwin through her involvement with the STARS Foundation, a program that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls in staying engaged in education.
Looking back, Latina said the experience was instrumental in forming her dedication towards mentoring and uplifting the next generation.
“This early involvement played a significant role in shaping my commitment to supporting others and giving back to my community values that continue to guide both my personal and professional life,” Latina said.
After opting out of a traditional university pathway, Latina continues to build on that foundation by encouraging young girls to go after their career ambitions and showing how accessible and achievable alternative pathways can be.
“Through open and relatable conversations, I promote the opportunities available within the resources sector and help others see viable pathways beyond traditional education routes,” she said.
As a proud Indigenous woman in a traditionally underrepresented field, Latina is also helping to drive cultural change within the workplace.
By consistently performing to a high standard and leading by example, she aims to challenge stereotypes and create space for important conversations about inclusion and opportunity.
“As an Indigenous female INLEC apprentice in the oil and gas industry, I contribute to creating more inclusive, respectful, and supportive workplaces through representation, cultural awareness, and everyday actions,” Latina said.
“I believe inclusion is driven not only through formal initiatives, but through consistent, respectful behaviour and a genuine willingness to learn from one another.”
Latina also contributes to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employee networks and supports new apprentices, fostering a workplace where people feel welcomed and confident to grow.
As her career continues to grow, Latina is focused on developing her skills while staying grounded in her community.
“My goals extend beyond technical progression. I am committed to becoming a confident tradesperson who maintains strong community connections and continues to give back,” Latina said.
