Historically, lifeboat maintenance on the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG offshore production facilities was carried out offshore, often in challenging conditions with logistical constraints.
Monadelphous since mid-2025, has been working to transition Ichthys LNG’s lifeboat maintenance to their workshop based in Darwin. Doing this maintenance work onshore is more efficient.
The first of 11 lifeboats arrived in Darwin in February for its 60-month major service. This was recognised with the attendance of INPEX General Manager Northern Territory - Richard Finch, Monadelphous Area Operations Manager - Bob Howieson and Viking Lead Service Engineer - Billy Kidgell to view the lifeboat and acknowledge the opportunity for local Darwin suppliers.
“Moving this work onshore provides us with greater schedule certainty and allows each lifeboat to be placed into a structured, long-term maintenance program,”Ryan Campbell, Monadelphous Safety Equipment Coordinator said.
“Servicing is significantly faster in a controlled onshore environment, reducing turnaround to days.”
Working in partnership with specialist contractor Viking Offshore and leveraging the Monadelphous Darwin workshop’s capability, supports maintenance conducted in a safe and controlled environment
Another important benefit is the positive impact on the Northern Territory supply chain.
“Bringing this program to Darwin strengthens our relationships with local suppliers and supports continued investment in local industry," Monadelphous Area Operations Manager, Bob Howieson, said.
“This includes local equipment and parts suppliers, coxswain and sea trials providers, along with other specialist services across the region.”
The Darwin workshop has an established track record of delivering lifeboat maintenance, and this campaign further enhances local capability in delivering consistent, high-quality servicing.
“Transitioning this lifeboat servicing program onshore reflects our continued commitment to building capability here in Darwin and strengthening local businesses and local people who support Ichthys LNG’s ongoing safe operations,” Richard Finch, INPEX General Manager Northern Territory, said.
