Energising safety – Highlights from the M&IS Energy HSR forum

Written by Communications | 16 Dec 2024

For M&IS Energy, safety is more than a priority—it’s our foundation. The Health and Safety Representative (HSR) Forum, held on 31 October and 22 November, brought together HSRs, senior leaders, and safety professionals to share insights, strengthen networks, and explore ways to enhance HSR experience across our operations.

With record attendance, the forums underscored the dedication of our HSRs to fostering a safe working environment. These forums, held twice annually, offer a unique learning, development, and collaboration platform, enabling HSRs to share experiences and ideas.

A fond farewell and a new chapter

This year’s final forums marked a milestone: We thanked Doug Macintyre, the General Manager of M&IS Energy, in his last round of HSR sessions. Doug’s support and leadership have been pivotal in shaping the success of these forums for many years.

Safety in action: presentations and insights

Each forum featured thought-provoking presentations, guest speakers and leaders sharing their insights:

  • Mark Rowan: Shared a day in the life of a Rigger/Scaffolder and HSR on Woodside’s Goodwyn Alpha, inspiring attendees with his commitment to safety.
  • Ryan Pillar: Delivered an insightful overview of the Pallet Fall Event on Woodside Pluto, fostering valuable discussions.
  • Wouter Pattynama (NOPSEMA Executive Director): Delivered an honest and personal session on psychosocial risks, providing invaluable insights.
  • Cam Stevens (Pocketknife Group Director): Explored the intersection of technology and safety, engaging attendees with innovative ideas for 2050 and practical tools for solving today’s challenges.
  • Doug Macintyre and Wang Wei offered updates on business performance and the monumental INPEX CPF Phase 2B expansion project, which left attendees inspired by the project’s scale and complexity.
  • Sarah Stinton facilitated a lively HSER Share session, identifying challenges and opportunities to improve the HSR experience.
  • Ross Ewing and Emma Gauld introduced resources to support HSRs in their critical roles.
  • Jamie Burgess and Ross Middenway highlighted rigging issues on Goodwyn Alpha, equipping HSRs with essential information to share with their crews.

Engagement and collaboration

The forums also included creative icebreakers and brain-boosting activities led by Irene Pettigrew, which set the tone for meaningful connections. From Diversity Bingo to a “cluedo incident mystery” featuring the leadership team as characters in the plot, these activities were both entertaining and impactful.

Positive Feedback

Attendees were enthusiastic, with feedback highlighting the value of networking, senior leadership involvement, and the collaborative spirit of the sessions:

“It was my first HSR forum and really enjoyed it. Great to meet other HSRs, understand different facilities, and hear about the INPEX 2B project.”

“The sharing of ideas and commitment in the room to safety was inspiring. It’s great to feel part of a team that’s dedicated to getting everyone home safely.”

These forums testify to M&IS Energy's commitment to fostering a strong safety culture through collaboration, innovation, and leadership.
