Breakers bring the heat (and home runs!)

Following a successful season in the Perth Softball League Summer competition, the North Coast Breakers headed north to take part in the annual Geraldton Softball Carnival, held over the WA Day long weekend.

Proudly supported by Monadelphous and High Energy Service, the Breakers joined a record high 60 teams from across Western Australia, with participants travelling from as far north as Port Hedland and as far south as Bunbury.

It was the largest level of participation the carnival had seen, bringing together players, supporters and local communities for a big weekend of softball.

The Breakers opened the carnival strongly, taking out their first game against Bunbury with a close win. The team then backed this up with another solid performance, defeating Absolut Vs.

Unfortunately, the opening day also brought challenges, including a serious hamstring injury to one of the team’s players and weather conditions that grew increasingly difficult throughout the day.

Despite rain setting in after lunch, the teams continued to play in true community sport spirit. Mixed results on day one saw the Breakers sitting fifth on the ladder, with four games still to play on day two.

Conditions on day two were only marginally better, with strong winds reaching 40km/h and gusts of up to 68km/h, making it particularly challenging for pitchers across the four-game day.

The Breakers began day two with a win over the Hedland Development Squad, with the momentum boost helping the Breakers secure three more close wins against Hornets, Muppets and Attfield Diamonds.

The team finished the carnival with a strong overall record, winning six of their nine games. Although the Breakers narrowly missed out on a place in the Grand Final following a three-way tie for second place, they showed great determination and resilience throughout the weekend.
