The Fix

Building connections in New Zealand

Earlier this May, the team visited the University of Canterbury in Christchurch in New Zealand to connect with aspiring engineers and share insight into careers with Monadelphous.

Led by Pre-Contracts Manager Raff Fox, Project Engineer Elisa Morgillo, and Learning and Development Officer Yuki Nguyen, the team took part in the STEM Careers Fair and hosted a dedicated presentation night that explored life as a FIFO engineer, Monadelphous’ graduate and vacation programs and job opportunities available.

While the primary purpose of the visit was to engage with students, the trip also provided an opportunity to build brand awareness more broadly across the New Zealand market.

Raff explained that the visit was a valuable chance to reinforce the range of opportunities available across the business.

“There’s strong demand for talent in Australia right now, particularly in WA, which is driven predominantly by major customers,” he said.

“This trip was about helping people understand those opportunities, whether they’re a student or professional considering a career move.”

Having studied at UC before relocating to WA with Monadelphous, Raff was also able to share firsthand insights about what that transition looks like and the range of experiences available within the company.

According to Yuki, the students were eager to hear about his experience and appreciated his insights.

“The enthusiasm from the students was incredible,” Yuki said.

“Many were genuinely excited about the prospect of moving to WA with Monadelphous and showed strong interest in FIFO opportunities, the lifestyle, and the career pathways available.”

One of the most engaging parts of the trip was Elisa’s presentation, where she reflected on her five and a half years with Monadelphous. She spoke about starting out in the graduate program and what life on-site looks like as a FIFO engineer.

“Elisa’s experience really resonated with them,” Yuki said.

“Hearing about her real-world experience helped students better visualise what their own careers could look like with Monadelphous.”

Across the two-day visit, the team met hundreds of students and conducted numerous in-person interviews.

“Meeting candidates face-to-face allowed us to get a really strong sense of who might be a good fit for the program,” Raff said.

“It also showed the level of care and commitment we place on bringing the right people into the business.”

The trip marked a valuable step in building stronger connections in New Zealand and continues to strengthen Monadelphous’ graduate talent pipeline, complementing our already strong Western Australian graduate cohort.

“These types of events are so important to help us connect with future talent and gives students direct insights into who we are,” Yuki said.

“They help us tell our story, and that makes all the difference.”
