“I look back on my career so far with fondness and although it hasn’t been without its challenges, I can’t help but think that in some small way the challenges that I faced have helped pave the way for young women joining the industry. As a result of that journey, I am a relatable example that regardless of gender, that hard work, perseverance, resilience and choosing to back yourself are all you need to have a successful career in the resources industry.”
Kerry has had a rich and diverse career working in the construction industry having worked on some of the biggest Power Generation and LNG projects locally and internationally, lending her a vast breadth of experience.
As a single mum, she takes pride in the role model that she is to her young daughter as she demonstrates first hand every day that through hard work and determination, you can be successful at anything you choose, and a positive mindset is key.
Kerry studied Welding Inspection through the South African Institute of Welding and given it was the early 2000’s, it was not surprising that she was the only woman in a class of 32. By the end of the course, only 22 remained of which only 9 passed the final exams – Kerry being the only student to receive full distinctions. This was something Kerry considered a defining moment in her early career, given she had not come from a technical background it demonstrated to her that through hard work she would succeed in all she put her mind to.
Kerry continued to persevere paying her dues by spending the better part of 10 years working onsite predominantly in Mining and Resources throughout Africa which lead to many fascinating and sometimes colourful encounters, an experience that Kerry says built the foundation and core knowledge necessary to propel her future success. As Kerry’s career progressed, she continued to climb the ranks which eventually led her to work in Europe heading up the Quality Function for a large Power Generation organisation. Moving to Australia in 2010 she worked for 10 years predominantly in the Oil and Gas Industry, moving to Monadelphous in 2020 to the role she is in now.
Kerry found that all the years she spent onsite as well as international exposure across multiple industries and cultures has been an invaluable contribution to her skillset and has given her a diverse edge that not a lot of people have which is something she is very proud of.
