Meet Liam Finnie, a Rope Access Supervisor at Hunter Valley Operations (HVO), New South Wales who has been with Monadelphous for 18 months. You may have seen Liam featured in a recent edition of Coalface magazine.
Liam made his start in the mining industry in 2013 as a scaffolder in New Zealand and has since found himself working on some of the largest mining projects in Australia.
Reflecting on his career so far, Liam credits working closely with his managers and work crews at Monadelphous to rapidly develop the rope access business in the Hunter Valley for helping him to develop both personally and professionally.
“The rapid growth of the business has kept us busy and has been demanding at times but it’s been very rewarding to see myself and my work mates grow and develop too,” Liam said.
“I really enjoy my role, working together with the crews and seeing the development of all team members as we branch out into new fields of work and new sites.
“We have a small army of ropies here at HVO every day, with varying trades and experience levels and everyone is working well together and learning a lot.”
Liam said that his role, based at the office at HVO, is overseeing the maintenance work the Monadelphous crews conduct daily in the wash plant as well as supervising the other coal prep plants we service in the valley.
“It is sometimes hard to explain to people that haven’t seen them what it is I do and where I work,” Liam said.
“People don’t often understand the environments we are exposed to daily, and it would surprise them to see the sheer size of the dump trucks and the mines themselves,” he said.
After work, Liam heads down to Newcastle to spend time outdoors whether that be out on the boat, biking or at the gym.
