Our team at Lihir Island, New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea have recently given back to Londolovit Urban Primary School, setting up students with the right tools to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.
Being regularly in touch with local community groups in the area, our team of expats and citizens working at Newcrest’s Lihir operations, identified the local students needed basic school supplies to learn and practice literacy and numeracy.
Working together with the school headmaster, Mr Otis Moab and Newcrest’s Opinion Leaders Program, the team distributed 100 school bags filled with pencils, pens, rulers, calculators and other stationery items and organised a colour printer with in cartridge stock – a much-needed resource to support the schools’ commitment to teaching literacy and numeracy.
Site Manager, Mal Campbell who led the initiative said they often see young people and adults in the local community struggling with literacy and the ability to pay for school fees and equipment.
“You can’t do a job without the right tools. It’s a small gesture we can provide to support the education of these local children with the right equipment. Donating these basic tools also build student’s self-esteem to learn confidently amongst their peers,” he said.
Congratulations to the Opinion Leaders Program team, Martin Todman, Anne Bell and Sarah Black who worked together to coordinate this education initiative.
