[Projects](https://news.monadelphous.com.au/the-pipeline/tag/projects) 29 Sep 2026 1 Minute Read When you’re installing underground infrastructure and the equipment you need to lift weighs several tonnes, the right crane makes a big difference. That’s where our 35-tonne Humma non-slewing mobile crane comes in. The crane joined our Roxby Downs operations in November 2024. With a 35-tonne lifting capacity and 20 metre working boom, it’s currently the only underground crane on site with that level of capacity. That gives the team the ability to take on lifts that would otherwise be difficult to complete underground, particularly where head height restrictions limit the use of smaller equipment. Mine End Superintendent Thomas Carling said the crane has opened up new possibilities for the team underground. “We are involved with the install UG substation infrastructure which can weigh upwards of 14 tonne per transformer, much above capacity underground for a 25t Franna with the head height restrictions,” Thomas said. “But there are numerous other examples of the unique utility of this crane.” And it’s already getting plenty of work. The team supports our customer with crane services across a broad range of surface and underground projects, from routine lifts through to complex critical lift activities. That has included electrical substation installations, dual crane lifts for Geho pumps and the installation of a new underground grizzly. Of course, getting a 35 tonne crane underground comes with its own challenges. The size of the Humma means operators need a high level of situational awareness when working in confined headings, around underground infrastructure and through areas with limited clearance. Add steep inclines, slippery roads and flooded drives into the mix, and there’s little room for error. “Anything underground is generally tough! Terrain down there can get sketchy. Flooded drives, steep inclines, slippery roads. You need to be on your game,” he said. Since taking over the crane, the team headed up by Michael Vugts and Nathan Gust has also focused on improving its reliability and functionality. This has included implementing travel motion lockout, providing transmission isolation and allowing live testing, and making significant improvements to the crane’s servicing and maintenance.
