Following structural integrity inspections, South32 identified the need for additional support beams beneath the concrete spillage floor in the secondary crusher building. While the installation environment presented challenges, including limited headroom and restricted lifting access, the project provided an opportunity to develop a safe and practical engineering solution tailored to site conditions. To overcome these challenges, the RTW operations team developed a custom-engineered lift frame that attaches to a forklift or telehandler, enabling the safe and controlled placement of steelwork in overhead areas. The solution was designed from the ground up, with the team completing laser scanning, engineering design and fabrication in-house. An animated installation methodology was also developed to help with risk assessment, planning and stakeholder engagement. The lift frame improves load stability, reduces exposure to potential hazards and minimises the manual handling demands typically associated with traditional lifting methods. Compact, certified and easily transportable, the design also offers flexibility for use across a range of sites and lifting applications. Delivered at a relatively low cost of approximately $5,000, the innovation provides value through improved efficiency, reduced labour requirements and safer execution in restricted-access environments.
