Joining Monadelphous in August 2022, Skylar quickly made her mark on the Bunbury team as an Administration Officer.
It wasn’t long before discussions with her area manager led her to reflect on her career, which prompted Skylar to explore opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Her curiosity led her to find the perfect next step—a Certificate IV in Leadership and Mentoring at South Metropolitan TAFE.
Reflecting on that time, Skylar talks about how the course became a stepping stone for her.
“This course was a great stepping stone for myself regarding advancing my skills and knowledge in this industry,” Skylar shared.
“After completing the course in 6 months, I continued working as an Administration Officer for the Bunbury Workshop with also being able to take on extra tasks such as participating in NAIDOC week events at Newton Moore Senior High School and career days at local schools and businesses.”
In October 2023, Skylar welcomed her daughter, Denver, into the world. After a short break to spend time with her family, Skylar returned to Monadelphous in June this year and is keen to continue developing her career.
“I want to transition my role from Administration into a mentoring/leadership role to assist people with their careers the way I was assisted throughout my journey,” she explained.
“I love helping people and watching people grow and succeed, so stepping into a career like that would be extremely rewarding for me.
“But first, I am putting my time and energy into my daughter while she is still so young. These moments are precious and go so quickly, so I want to ensure that I am present and enjoying as much of it as I can.”
For Skylar, the support she received through the Indigenous Pathway Program (IPP) made all the difference. She speaks with warmth about the encouragement and guidance provided by mentors like Claudia Bellis and Matt Macfarlane.
“They were incredible,” Skylar shared.
“From helping me choose the right course to giving me advice on my career, they made sure I had everything I needed to succeed.
“It’s such a great way to start building your career. You’re supported from day one, and it gives you the confidence to take on new challenges and grow your skills.”
Skylar’s love for her role at Monadelphous shines through in how she talks about her day-to-day work.
“I enjoy the fast pace of administration—no two days are ever the same, and there’s always a new challenge to take on,” she said.
Born and raised in Bunbury as a proud Whadjuk Wardandi Bibbulmun woman, Skylar’s connection to her community and family runs deep. She’s the youngest of six, and family time is a priority for her.
Whether she’s out walking her two dachshunds or spending a quiet moment at the beach, Skylar loves being outdoors with Denver.
Though her days are busy, she still manages to sneak in the occasional crime series—“a rare treat when you’re a parent,” she jokes.
