The final countdown in Geraldton

A 35-tonne lift, a brand new conveyor belt and a shed full of steel are just some of the major milestones ticked off as RTW and MMS push towards the finish line on their Geraldton Port project.

The team has now completed the structural steel erection, including the shed build, lifted the 35-tonne switch room into position and installed the CV402 belt, marking some major steps forward as the project enters its closing stages.

Our team at RTW have also completed all fabrication and delivered the steel to site, with the Capel workshop once again proving its expertise on a job that Superintendent Craig Davies described as right in the team’s wheelhouse.

“The RTW workshop in Capel runs like a well-oiled machine. This sort of job is their bread and butter, and they delivered the steel fabrication with exceptional quality and high efficiency,” Craig said.

On site, MMS has completed around 90 per cent of its scope, including structural steel installation, shed cladding, rapid roller doors, the conveyor belt and sump pumps. The team is now working through the remaining piping and punch list items.

The tight and vertical work area has continued to present challenges, particularly with multiple crews working in close quarters, but the team has maintained an excellent safety record while keeping the project moving.

“Working in a tight work area has definitely been a challenge, but the crew have done an amazing job,” Craig said.

With the finish line now in sight, completing the remaining pipework and the CV402 tie-in shutdown are the next major milestones over the coming weeks.

With the project timeline evolving throughout the year, Craig said the standout achievement has been the way the teams have worked together to tackle each challenge along the way.

“The highlight has definitely been the teamwork on site and off site. There have been several challenges, but everyone has worked really well as a team, and the finish line is in sight,” Craig said.

With the steel in place, fabrication complete and the final pieces coming together, the team are firmly into the home stretch.
