Kalgoorlie Project Manager, Gregg, has set off on long service leave to live out the Australian dream of travelling around the country. Before he heads off on his trip of a lifetime, we caught up with him to hear about his experience of living and working in Kalgoorlie.
Born and raised in South Australia, Gregg first got an insight into the industry through some work experience at school in his hometown of Port Pirie. He describes his first exposure to life on site as something he had never seen before.
“It was like entering a foreign world, but something must have clicked, as it inspired me to study mechanical engineering at university,” explains Gregg.
In 2006, he moved to Kalgoorlie, a place he knew almost nothing about. Leaving his family and friends behind, he took the leap, which in hindsight was the right move. After a couple of years working for a customer, he joined us in 2008 and immersed himself in the world of contracting.
Gregg gained experience on some of the biggest jobs in the region, which saw him promoted into the role of Project Manager.
“Contracting is dynamic, fast paced and exciting. There is always something different happening. It gives you the ability to work with multiple big customers and offers a variety of projects. It opens a lot of doors for those willing to put themselves out there.”
After seventeen years living in town, Gregg couldn’t speak more highly about the lifestyle that Kalgoorlie offers him and his young family.
“There is a sense of freedom living out here. You have everything you need, with the added benefit of knowing your neighbours and being only three-minute's drive from work.”
“At the Kalgoorlie branch, everyone is open and willing to help each other out. We take our work seriously and focus on putting time into planning and executing jobs, but we always find an opportunity to have a laugh,” he concludes.
Gregg is planning to hit the road in July with Exmouth, Karijini and Point Samson first on his list to explore. We wish him safe travels and look forward to hearing about his adventures.
