Over the past two months, Robert Day, Michael Zacher and Ian Williams have each reached 15 years with Monadelphous, marking a combined 45 years with the company.

While their careers have taken different paths, all three have spent their milestone years working together at the Muja Power Station.

Rob joined Monadelphous 15 years ago, when the business took on work at both Kwinana and Muja. With an electrical background, he has since worked across a range of roles, including electrical supervision, scheduling and planning, plant isolations and permits, operations supervision and administration.

“In my head I just help gently ease the rudder to help steer in the right direction,” Rob said.

For Rob, the variety of roles has meant plenty of opportunities to solve problems, build things and help return the plant to service.

“I have always got a really good sense of achievement either building something from scratch or repairing/restoring plant back to service,” Rob said.

Michael’s connection with Muja goes back even further. He first started at the site in 2002 and will reach 25 years working there next July. He joined Monadelphous in 2011 and has since worked his way up through the ranks.

Now an Operator Supervisor, Michael controls the Permit to Work system for the plant.

His move into full-time work was a major change after 20 years in the shearing industry.

“It was like winning lotto,” Michael said.

“Having a job that was full time meant now there was money going into our account every week and getting paid holidays something that I hadn’t experience before as Shearing was seasonal.”

Ian is fast approaching an incredible 27 years of working down at Muja, and in his time down there he has spent the majority of it as the maintenance supervisor planning and coordinating critical maintenance tasks. In his spare time Ian loves fishing trips and mountain bike stunt riding.

Over the years, Rob, Michael and Ian have all been involved in major project work at Muja.

Rob describes himself as a “lifer”, having spent all 15 years at the site, while Michael has worked on projects including the Rill Tower and Plinth replacement, concrete repairs on the Bullring floor and coordinating the emptying of the AB bunkers.

The bunker operation was a particular highlight for Michael. Working alongside the site team, he coordinated the emptying of 16 bunkers over 15 days while the plant remained operational.

The final bunker was emptied without the unit tripping, bringing the operation to a successful close.

For Michael, sharing the knowledge he has built up over his years at Muja is now one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

“Teaching fellow colleagues what I have learnt in my time being at Muja, seeing change for the better (making things safer, easy ways to carry out tasks etc),” Michael said.

Rob also takes pride in the role the Muja team plays in keeping a critical WA asset operating.

“Muja power station is one of 12 critical WA asset, to know we are involved with keeping the lights on does bring a sense of daily achievement,” Rob said.

After 15 years, Rob, Michael and Ian have plenty of experience between them, and there is still more to come.

For now, 45 Mono's years between three team members is a milestone well worth celebrating.
