Catching up on all things shutdowns and projects

Our heavy lift team has been integral in maintaining critical infrastructure across our projects, taking on significant challenges that come with the long-term nature of its crane services.

Project Manager Joseph Wong shared his pride in the team’s commitment.

“Our crew consistently demonstrates a dedication to safety and performance. It’s this focus that’s driving the successful completion of our shutdowns and major project work,” Joseph said.

Recent achievements include the Kings Valley shutdown, where the team replaced 14 belts, and the Firetail Modular Shutdown, which involved extensive equipment replacements.

Brad’s Tailing Project is another critical undertaking for our client.

“This project is crucial as it diverts water to a new tailings dam, relieving the current dam that’s near capacity,” Joseph explained.

“We’re installing large pump stations and assembling a six-piece, 90-tonne tank – a massive task for our team, but one they’re handling expertly.”

Project progress and key changes

Since the start of the financial year, the team has made several strategic changes to better support field leaders and crews.

Joseph detailed some of these updates.

“With Kylie Brown, our Project Superintendent, rejoining the onsite team after her secondment, we’ve restructured site leadership and adjusted rosters to improve support,” he added.

“Introducing flexible 2:2 rosters, bringing in additional crew at Solomon HME, and appointing three permanent supervisors for shutdowns are all part of ensuring our team has the resources they need.”

Safety innovations have also been a focus, with new In Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) Franna Override alerts now standard on all frannas, and expanded Drive Fatigue Distraction Monitoring systems deployed across additional vehicles.

“We’re continually looking for ways to improve, and these innovations are helping our team stay safe and effective on the job,” Kylie said.

Milestones and client collaboration

Meeting shutdown and fixed scope deadlines is a core goal for the team, and Joseph emphasised the importance of working closely with the client.

“We have a seamless process in place with the client, and it’s rewarding to know that our tailored service is making an impact,” Joseph said.

Kylie echoed this sentiment.

“The relationship we’ve built with our client is something we’re incredibly proud of, and their trust in our work is evident in how they rely on us for these crucial tasks,” Kylie said.

Innovation in problem-solving

The team’s focus on innovative solutions has been a game-changer. Kylie highlighted the IVMS Franna Override alert as a standout feature.

“It’s not just about meeting operational needs – it’s about going above and beyond to create safer, more efficient systems,” Kylie said.

“Our Crane Operators and Riggers are constantly pushing for improvement, and it’s that proactive approach that keeps Monadelphous ahead of the curve.”

Looking Ahead

December marks a significant milestone, as the Eliwana and Kings Valley shutdowns are set to overlap.

“This is going to be one of our biggest operations yet,” said Joseph.

“We’re bringing in over 120 crew members, 12 supervisors, 13 slew cranes, seven frannas, three trucks, and a 300-tonne Crawler Crane. We’ve already started planning, mobilising, and ensuring everything is in place to pull this off smoothly.”
