Get to know Tom Shenton

Earlier this year we highlighted the amazing teamwork of our crews and supporting personnel involved with the Northwest Stormpetrel. The team were recently awarded the Maintenance and Industrial Services (M&IS) Teamwork Baton for their work on coordinating repairs for the vessel. We had a chat with one of those team members, Project Engineer Tom Shenton.  

Tom made his start in our Oil and Gas business unit as a graduate engineer and has been involved in a wide range of projects, working on various contracts during his five years with Monadelphous so far. 

Currently working on our maintenance and turnaround activities in the Kimberley region, Tom is focused on the onshore fabrication of items needed to complete scopes offshore and is starting to expand his role into the offshore welding space.  

Tom said that the greatest highlight of his role is the enjoyment he gets from his day-to-day work and the people he gets to work with.  

“Firstly, it’s a fantastic working environment at Monadelphous and it makes work much more enjoyable when you’re surrounded by good people,” he said.  

“I enjoy the variety of work and opportunities I get to be involved in and learn from – jumping from Greenfields fabrication into weld repairs and then into Brownfields construction is exciting and keeps it interesting and challenging.” 

Tom said that, amongst the main highlights of his career so far with Monadelphous are the successful executions of the NW Sanderling and NW Stormpetrel tanker repairs.  

“The tanker repairs were an interesting project to be part of and it reinforced the importance of what we do and how well we work together as a team, particularly when we were awarded the M&IS Teamwork Baton,” he said.  

“Early on in my career I was the nightshift engineer during the first shutdown for a major customer and that was also a great experience to be a part of and learn from.  

“Another highlight at the top of my list is the development of the Personnel Logistics Group automated reporting platform, which was an important and successful project. 

Tom is currently expanding into the offshore welding space and has been making the most of the introduction of core crew welders offshore to help improve our service offering to the customer.  

Away from work, you’ll find Tom outdoors and active.  

 “All through summer I’m a sprint coach and Patrol Captain for North Cottesloe Surf Lifesaving Club and during winter I’m typically out training for the City to Surf race,” he said. 

“I also love a bit of golf – although my skill leaves a lot to be desired.” 

On top of that, he has been selected to represent Western Australia for running across three different surfaces, including beach sand, athletics track and cross country.  

When he gets the opportunity after the completion of his current project, Tom and his wife will be escaping to Scandinavia for a well-earned holiday after COVID previously scuttled their holiday plans in 2020.
