Confined space rescue training

Our Port and East Pilbara Operations team recently conducted a simulated confined space rescue in a fuel tanker at Nelson Point Port Hedland on January 19, 2024. 

In collaboration with the customer, the team successfully extracted the worker from the tanker within an impressive 15-minute timeframe from the onset of the emergency call. 

The training aimed to prepare the team for real-life scenarios where critical situations arise, ensuring that each member knows their role and responsibilities in an emergency situation. 

Scott Williams, Supervisor, acknowledged the challenges of the simulation and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to practice crucial skills necessary for prompt real-life rescues. 

“The team values the chance to engage in realistic simulations and the dedication put into this training. It's rare to have confined space training opportunities on-site, making such exercises important to help everyone understand their role,” said Scott. 

The exercise also highlighted areas for improvement, including concerns about the stability of the rescue tripod during the lifting process. 

“We've learned the importance of proper tripod operation and minimising movement that could compromise its stability,” Scott noted. 

The rescue team consisted of 16 individuals, with 12 from Monadelphous and four from the customer’s emergency rescue team.
