Taking every opportunity

Two languages, two degrees and one very impressive project engineer – meet Evelyn Tan.  

Evelyn was born on Christmas Island and speaks two languages and a dialect, has two degrees, one in Engineering and the other in Human Resources and is one of our graduate project engineers in our Heavy Lift team.  

We recently got to talk to Evelyn and learn more about her personal story and journey with Monadelphous.  

Joining Monadelphous four years ago as a Resource Officer in the recruitment team, Evelyn sought to pursue a career in the human resources space. However, when an opportunity was presented to join the Heavy Lift team as a graduate engineer, she couldn’t turn it down.  

“An opportunity came up where I could learn, develop and grow my skills at Monadelphous in the engineering space and I thought it was too good an opportunity to challenge myself, so I accepted and soon found myself in the engineering graduate program,” said Evelyn.  

“I studied engineering and human resources at university so it’s been great to use skills I’ve learnt from both degrees during my time at Monadelphous, and I think the biggest takeaway is just saying yes and taking every opportunity because you never know where it might take you.  

When asked about the highlights of working at Monadelphous, Evelyn says joining the Heavy Lift team has been the biggest highlight because of the opportunities it continues to bring her.  

“I think back to my first fly-in fly-out experience which I went in to with a lot of nerves because it was new and I wasn’t sure what to expect but it turned out to be one of the best experiences,” said Evelyn.  

“I remember just how nervous I was and now I’m looking forward to flying out to another site soon, so it’s amazing just how fast things have changed, and I feel lucky to be able to do what I do in the team.  

Evelyn has since flown to a few different sites around Western Australia and even South Australia and is always willing and eager to undertake a new project.  

Currently in Evelyn’s day to day she completes lift and transport studies.  

“When I’m completing studies for the team, it involves liaising with supervisors on site to determine rigging, cranage, access and whether there are any constraints and the priorities of the project. More recently I’ve been learning about self propelled modular trailers (SPMT) transport loading plans.  

“I’ve enjoyed learning about SPMT plans and I find that with each new project we undertake it provides its own unique challenges so I’m always learning something new and that’s what I really enjoy about my role.  

“I’m grateful to have a supportive team around me who are always willing to help answer any questions I have, and I get to show my appreciation for the team through my passion for baking. If you need a great brownie recipe, you can use my go to classic chewy brownie recipe,” said Evelyn.  

Not only is Evelyn a baking extraordinaire, she’s also fond of being outdoors and challenging herself with hikes with her favourite hike being Bluff Knoll in Western Australia’s southwest.  

“Bluff Knoll is my favourite WA hike. My friends and I are also planning to travel to Switzerland and Austria next year on a hiking trip, so fingers crossed it all goes to plan. One hike we’re looking forward to is the sky ladder in Austria,” said Evelyn.
