All heart and wool

As winter settles over Australia, a thoughtful gesture is bringing comfort to those doing it tough.

Each month, St Patrick’s Cathedral in Bunbury hosts a free lunch for people sleeping rough. With temperatures dropping, volunteers noticed many regulars lacked warm headwear.

Project Manager at RTW, Clinton Garnie, who often volunteers his time at the church, saw an opportunity to help.

"It’s cold out there, and something as simple as a beanie can make a big difference,” Clinton said.

“We had a few to spare and figured we could find them some good homes."

With generous support from the MMS team, beanies were sourced, packed, and delivered from Perth.

"It really was a team effort. From Paul’s backing, to Rosalind tracking them down, to Chad bringing them down to Bunbury, everyone chipped in," said Clinton.

Twenty warm beanies, along with a supply of wool-lined, moisture-controlled socks, thermals and gloves, were handed out at lunch. It was a simple act of kindness that showed people cared.

The church will soon launch a drive to provide garden carts, so people no longer need to use shopping carts to store their belongings.

Small things can carry a lot of warmth, especially when shared.
