Bringing warmth this winter

More than 50 south-west motorcycle riders have once again demonstrated their commitment to the community by participating in the annual Blanket Ride and donating essential items ahead of the cooler months.  

The South West Social Riders Club made the journey from Collie to Bunbury's Intown Centre, marking the 10th anniversary of this heartwarming initiative. 

Stephen' Stubby' Chitty, the founder of the Blanket Ride, expressed his satisfaction with the event.  

"As the founder of the Blanket Ride, it has always been good to participate knowing you're helping someone less fortunate than yourself," he said.  

The initiative began with Stephen's simple and important observation about a need within the community as the weather cooled down.  

"I could see a need to help those people struggling over the winter months," he said. 

The Monadelphous community rallied behind this cause with an unexpected but highly successful fundraising BBQ.  

"All I was asking for was for Brad White, my supervisor, to print some flyers to advertise the ride. He then said we could have a BBQ, and everyone could donate a blanket. The response was overwhelming; thank you all for your donation," he said. 

"Hopefully, it will let people know that there are homeless people and families out there struggling and needing help." 

When asked about the donations, Stephen's positivity shone through.  

"Always happy with donations, as I always say something is better than nothing," he said.  

The riders' journey through Victoria Street in Bunbury to the In Town Centre and Shoestring Cafe was filled with memorable moments. 

 "Riding our motorcycles through Victoria Street in Bunbury, making heaps of noise before going to the In Town Centre, Shoestring Cafe to drop off the blankets," Stephen said, recalling one of his favourite moments from the event. 

Looking to the future, Stephen confirmed ongoing commitment to the Blanket Ride.  

"As it has been going for 10 years and is an annual event, we plan to keep doing it for as long as we can," he said.
