The Monadelphous Graduate Program can be a rewarding experience that can take your career to places all around the world.

Jack Goldrick joined the program earlier this year and is currently working as a project engineer on the Kathleen Valley project.

However, Jack’s program experience started at Monadelphous’ company, Inteforge, where he had the opportunity to work in China and Vietnam.

He noted the key difference between the Chinese and Australian sites being the scale of operations and the consequences of this.

“It was very cool, seeing it comparatively to Australia, it is on the larger scale of things. We stood in a workshop of 600,000 square metres,” Jack said.

“It’s more dangerous because of the huge steel pieces, but the workers are more than capable of handling the equipment.”

When asked about his favourite memory, Jack mentioned the incredible food and the new sights he encountered.

“We ate very well. I had a day trip to the Great Wall of China, which was absolutely something I had to do. The experience alone and meeting everyone was memorable,” he said.

Back home now, Jack enjoying the shift to his current role.

“The part I’m enjoying the most is people looking to me for solutions to site issues and being able to provide solutions cooperatively with the trades,” he said.

“Now I am in Kathleen Valley, seeing structures that used to be 3D models erected into reality is amazing. I’m excited to work with the client a bit more and hopefully start a project from scratch and see that to completion.”

On why he chose engineering, he explained that he was looking for something challenging and appreciated the diverse opportunities ahead of him.

“I always wanted variety in my work; right now, I’m on a two-in-one swing. It’s never the same thing, so I enjoy the growth in learning,” Jack explained.

“Monadelphous had the construction background that I studied in, and they still had the capabilities to go into mining. The diverse roles and opportunities on offer drew me in.

“I have learnt so much so far, a lot of which has come from making mistakes, paying attention to all the details and making thoughtful decisions.”

While the future could open many doors for Jack, he is excited to gain more work experience and expand his skill set.

“You never know everything, so I enjoy being a ‘jack’ of all trades,” he said.
