Cleaning up Lihir Island

Over 70 of our employees based on Lihir Island in Papua New Guinea (PNG) recently facilitated a full-day Cleanathon in an effort to keep the Island clean and preserve the natural environment.

The entire initiative was organised and funded by our very own team of Monadelphous employees, who coordinated the volunteers, forklifts and skip bins, as well as had custom t-shirts made for the occasion.

PNG local and National SMP Supervisor, Arnold Ningikau, was the driving force behind the initiative, with a keen passion for looking after the Island and encouraging the local youth to do the same.

Site Manager, Jason Merrin, said he was blown away by the commitment and effort of the team on the day, especially Arnold.

“Arnold is an opinion leader within our local workforce, which means anyone can come to him for guidance and support if needed. He is someone the team really looks up to.”

“It was very inspiring to see the passion of the team coming together for a great cause. There’s a lot of work to do in the local area and it’s a good starting point,” said Jason.

The team also encouraged other local people to join in and help out and, overall, they managed to fill four large skip bins with rubbish along a stretch of nine kilometres, only stopping once they had run out of rubbish bags.
