Welcome to the March edition of On the Hook. It’s been a great start to 2026!
I want to begin by thanking everyone across Heavy Lift for hitting the ground running and setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.
We started the year off with some exciting news, with our first two trainees completing our inaugural Crane Operations Pathway Program. Congratulations to Dakota Ellery Swain and Joshua Fitzroy on three years of effort, persistence, and plenty of time on the hook. As the very first participants to finish the program since it launched, they’ve reached an important milestone for themselves, and for our business.
The Pathway Program was created under our Gender Diversity and Inclusion Plan and has become a leading example of how targeted initiatives can build capability and support women and Indigenous people into technical roles. Lorna Rechichi has been a driving force behind this work, and her nomination as a finalist in the 2026 CMEWA Women in Resources Awards is very well deserved. As our first female operational GM, Lorna has made a lasting impact on how we support our people and develop emerging talent, and it’s great to see that work recognised.
A big shout out to Jon Mallory, for stepping up to present at our recent EC Town Hall, sharing a project update on the 886tonne Linkspan Bridge Project in Broome. It’s always great to see our team confidently representing Heavy Lift on the broader EC stage.
From an HSE perspective, we’ve started the year the right way. Travis Gaspar and the team have reported strong safety performance across our Fortescue crane services, including injury‑free completion of Kings and major shutdowns across Fortescue sites. This reflects the hard work of our teams in the field, the planning by our leaders, and our ongoing commitment that the safe way is the only way.
We did, however, experience a recordable incident involving a serious hand injury to one of our team members. It’s a timely reminder that our safety journey is ongoing and that we must stay focused on keeping ourselves and our teammates safe.
Over the coming months, we will be sharpening our focus on fatal risk controls, mobile plant interactions and eliminating incidents involving mobile plant colliding with other objects. A new fatal risk campaign will be rolled out across sites, supported by targeted audits and training in critical areas including loads and lifting, working at heights, driving and mobile equipment.
Operationally, we’re in a steady position and we’re positioned well for a productive year. Mobilisation continues at Pluto 1 and Brockman Syncline 1, and our 1600t Rubino crawler crane has now moved to BHP’s Car Dumper 4 (CD4) site. These projects highlight both the scale of work ahead and the capability of our people and fleet.
Project Ceres and Pluto 1 are also progressing well, with strong early work across engineering, planning and mobilisation. Dave Muirhead and the Alevro team have done a great job setting these projects up for success, and we’re looking forward to seeing the next phase unfold.
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dave Muirhead on his appointment as Alevro Joint Venture Manager. With more than 13 years at Monadelphous and deep experience across Alevro’s projects, Dave is well placed to continue steering the JV with a strong focus on operational excellence, collaboration and growth. His appointment reflects the significant contribution he has made to Alevro to date, and I know he will continue driving its success in the heavy lift and heavy shift market.
As Rod Stribley steps out of the role and wraps up his time with the Heavy Lift team, I want to thank him on behalf of all of us for his steady leadership over the past four years and for helping shape Alevro into what it is today. We wish him all the best as he moves into his next chapter with Development and Growth.
Thank you again for your commitment, teamwork and the pride you bring to your work every day. It’s been a strong start to the year, and I’m confident we’ll continue this momentum as we move into our next wave of major project delivery.
Stay safe and keep looking out for one another.
Daniel
