Hi everyone and welcome to the August edition of On the Hook.
This week we celebrated the achievements of the participants in the Indigenous Pathways Program with an event at the Perth office attended by the trainees, senior leaders, hiring managers and members of the Steering Committee (including Rio Tinto). The program aims to increase the amount of skilled and qualified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our business including the Heavy Lift crane operator traineeship which is supported by the program. In this edition we talk to Brett Weeks on his experience of the pathways program – thank you Brett for sharing your insights and thank you for the contribution being made by all our trainees.
Dave Muirhead, Rod Stribley and I in conjunction with Fagioli recently returned from Houston, Texas where we were invited by a potential customer to present on a recent bid for a significant project coming up in WA. Our engineering, tendering, HSE, IR and management teams have contributed significantly to the tender and our demonstrated capability and experience across multiple projects formed a key part of the submission. We received very good feedback on the quality of the submission and we’re continuing discussions with the potential customer and hopefully there will be more news to share soon.
You should all have received an invite to participate in our online 2022 Monadelphous Employee Survey, to share your perspectives on working at Monadelphous and your experiences within our workplaces. I strongly encourage you all to participate in this survey as your feedback will help us to understand what we are doing well and how to improve the employee experience. The survey is being conducted by an independent agency, Painted Dog Research and all responses are confidential and anonymous. The survey is open until Sunday 11th September.
We unfortunately had a serious incident at the start of August involving a Franna roll over during travel, which resulted in the operator receiving treatment to a wound on his head, but the potential consequence could have been very significant. We have shared learnings from the incident with our teams internally and with our customer and are progressing a series of actions following the investigation. As a team we need to learn from these incidents and take action to prevent any such incidents happening again. We have continued to see several incidents involving equipment damage throughout the month and have reinforced the importance of the role of the spotter, the importance of planning when working in tight and restricted areas and communication between the spotter and the operator. Please engage in these discussions, speak up and continue to appropriately risk assess tasks before they are performed.
We recognise and highlight in this edition the team efforts to grow the heavy lift and heavy haul scope at Iron Bridge from the original SPMT scope to include specialist trailers, block trucks and a materials crew. The team have done an incredible job to grow the scope and deliver a positive outcome for the business and for our customer, with a strong safety performance. Thank you and congratulations to the entire team!
Throughout August we had significant activity across Fortescue (FMG) sites with a Kings Valley major shutdown, Firetail shutdown and CV125 belt lap out – all successfully delivered and incident free. Next month, significant activities continue with a Firetail major shut, Eliwana shut, Kings valley line outage and a Woodside turn around. I want to acknowledge the significant efforts in planning that has been required over several months for this level of activity and the efforts of the team in successfully delivering.
Monadelphous Group reported a strong performance for the year ended 30 June 2022 and the Group has secured $1.45 billion in new contracts and contract extensions since the start of the financial year, which continues to highlight the strong business that we are all part of, and the significant opportunities that exist. You can read more about the results across the group in this edition.
Thank you everyone for the contribution you make every day to the team and the support you provide to your fellow teammates!
Stay safe.
Lorna
