A 900km jetski trek from Mackay to Port Douglas, in the name of charity and the children – sign Joel Genninges and 110 other jet skiing fundraisers’ up for the challenge and good cause.
Raising $320,000 in profit, in March over six days, Joel embarked on the iconic Yamaha Variety Jet Trek. The adrenaline-packed cause sees a crew of fundraisers, like Joel, take on the 900km journey to raise funds and awareness for the Variety Children’s Charity.
“There were two key drivers for me. The opportunity to go to places I hadn’t been, and via a jet ski, something that you couldn’t normally do on your own; and most importantly my kids, who are both type one diabetics,” shared Joel Genninges, Manager – Gladstone Operations for the Engineering Construction division’s Electrical and Instrumentation business.
“It was incredible, it was challenging, unforgettable, and to top it off we raised $320,000 in profit for the Variety Children’s Charity.”
It was Joel’s first year participating, and he’s already signed up for next year’s trek, which sees the crew travel approximately 200kms a day (see map of the journey below).
“We pushed pretty hard every day, we were on the water at about 7am and wrapped up at about 5pm. It’s an extremely well organised initiative. It’s not all possible without a support crew of cars and people to provide food, fuel and other requirements.”
The trek includes a full day of riding, as well as nightly functions in each town to raise further awareness and funds, inclusive of guest speakers.
