Cleaning up for tomorrow

In March, some of our team members in Brisbane joined Clean Up Australia Day 2024, helping to create a cleaner future.

With gloved up hands they took on the task of addressing waste and litter in the streets, parks, bushland, and the Brisbane River, affectionately known as the brown snake.

During the clean-up, take away coffee cups and lids were the most common type of litter found.

Nick Udy, HSE Manager - Eastern Region, highlighted that the types of waste collected underscored the importance of individual responsibility in waste disposal.

“People need to take responsibility for disposing of their waste, including take away coffee cups and lids after enjoying their daily brew. Littering can become a habit and once this happens it takes a lot of effort to restore the area to its former beauty,” Nick said.

Clean Up Australia Day, an annual event founded by Australian Ian Kiernan AO in 1989, has grown into one of the country's largest community-based environmental campaigns. The event reminds us of our collective responsibility in preserving and protecting our natural surroundings.

The graph below shows which types of waste were the biggest contributors reported to Clean Up Australia Day during their events in FY2023, and this aligns with what is collected during Monadelphous hosted clean up events.

Brisbane team's initiative emphasises the importance of personal responsibility in reducing our environmental footprint.

If you missed out on this opportunity to help clean up your local area, another clean up event is run in August each year, so start planning your involvement now.
