Innovation delivers new digs for site

This month, the Engineering Construction Assets team welcomed the delivery of the first batch of ‘Plug and Play’ buildings to our temporary commissioning yard at Hope Valley in Perth, some of which were swiftly dispatched to our CGP3 project in Greenbushes. 

The Plug and Play modules, which took out the top prize in the 2023 EC innovation awards, will save significant time and cost while providing a comfortable, energy-efficient solution to the establishment of our site complexes.  

Paul Brown, EC Assets & Logistics Manager, who spearheaded the innovation and acquisition, said the new buildings are manufactured from shipping containers into ready-to-use offices, training rooms, crib rooms, tool stores, ICT rooms and ice rooms. 

“The office complexes can be placed together in a different configurations to suit the needs of our various projects. We can also avoid excessive hire costs and supply issues by having our own buildings. Being clearly Monadelphous branded with the distinctive red, they should look very professional on site,” Paul said.  

“The design standardises the electrical, data and plumbing connections to reduce time and effort to mobilise. The ability to connect the modules also allows us to expand and contract the site facilities as required throughout the life cycle of the project. A number of the buildings meet wind region D requirements and won’t require blocks and tiedowns. With internal fixtures bolted down, this negates the need for time to move and secure furniture.  

“We will trial and test the design of this first generation of modules to see if there’s anything we can improve.” 

The modules were fabricated in Shanghai, China before being shipped to Perth. The first shipment contained 29 modules eight of which are heading to CGP3. This consists of a large tool store and a meeting/training room. The second shipment of 16 buildings ( 2 x 12mx3m offices & 14 x 12mx3m crib rooms) has left China and is due to arrive in early April. As fast as we commission these buildings a further 4-5 crib rooms will go to CGP3.  

Mike Brady, EC Divisional Services Manager said the delivery is an important milestone for EC productivity and innovation, and a display of the Monos values of teamwork and achievement.  

“The team managed any challenges by finding a solution. They presented a solid business case for investment that was backed by a can-do attitude and I’m proud of this outcome,” Mike said. 

“This is example of how we can turn promising ideas into a reality to improve our business. There's many ways we can adopt innovative ideas, including submitting them to MProve and speaking to your manager about new ways of working.”
