A huge congratulations to Hailee Espie-Baker, who was named Apprentice of the Year at the 2025 NAIDOC Gala Ball and Awards Ceremony in Darwin.
The Gala Ball, held on Larrakia Country, is a major highlight of NAIDOC Week and celebrates the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the country.
This year’s theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, recognised individuals who are shaping a strong and resilient future, something Hailee has been doing throughout her apprenticeship and beyond.
Working as a Mechanical Fitter and Machinist on our INPEX project, Hailee recently completed her Certificate III in Mechanical Engineering. She has developed a broad skill set through hands-on experience across pump overhauls, turbine maintenance, machining, inspections and more.
Hailee’s early years in the trade weren’t without challenge. As the only female mechanical fitter on her team at the time, she had to learn how to navigate a male-dominated environment and find her confidence. Through perseverance, resilience and support from mentors, she built the strong technical and problem-solving skills that have shaped her into the tradesperson she is today.
She’s also made a big impact off the tools. Hailee regularly mentors junior apprentices, creates safe spaces for learning, and helps foster a more inclusive environment for everyone on site. And, she is heavily involved in the community. She’s taken part in NAIDOC Week celebrations in Darwin, visited schools, and represented the trade at career expos, where she shares her story and encourages young people, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, to explore careers in the industry.
Hailee also won the Outstanding Tradeswoman, Operator or Technician Award at the Women in Resources NT Awards earlier this year. Congratulations on all your awards, Hailee!
