Rolling ahead of schedule - RSM project delivered early

Recently, Monos successfully completed the expansion of our customer’s Rolling Stock Maintenance (RSM) Workshop in Port Hedland.

The works involved successfully extending the existing RSM wheelset workshop and installing a new Principal Supplied portal wheel lathe to reprofile wheelsets.

The project scope also included other significant workshop modifications, civil and structural upgrades, new electrical infrastructure, and associated testing and commissioning.

Site work commenced in May 2025, and through a combination of construct-only and design-and-construct phases, the team achieved Practical Completion in February 2026, nine weeks ahead of schedule.

Over the duration of the project, the team safely completed just under 73,000 work hours, with average site manning of around 22 people, and a peak workforce of 30 during critical phases.

Project Lead Tye Monaghan highlighted a key milestone that contributed to the overall early completion.

“The installation and switchover to the new main switchboard was critical,” Tye said.

“Progress on other works depended on this, so Monadelphous revised the installation and energisation methodology.

“This enabled the switchover to be completed earlier than planned and allowed bulk earthworks to commence ahead of schedule.”

One of the project’s key challenges was safely executing complex, multi-disciplinary works within a constrained and operational workshop environment.

Through close collaboration with the customer and strong coordination across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, design and services disciplines, the team maintained safe and uninterrupted operations.

“Having a collaborative customer allowed continual forward momentum. This relationship built a foundation of trust and confidence in our ability as a team to deliver results that exceeded expectations.”
