Over the past few months, 24 undergraduate students have taken part in the Monadelphous Summer Vacation Program, gaining valuable hands-on experience across multiple sites, including Melchor.
As the program reached an end, they reflected on the experience and the lessons they’ll take into their future careers.
For many of them, the highlight was the chance to work on-site and be part of real projects. Getting firsthand insight into project execution, problem-solving, and teamwork gave them a deeper understanding of the industry.
“I really enjoyed being immersed in the engineering side of things, where I was exposed to the real-world challenges that come with managing projects,” Rahul, who was based in Mining & Minerals North-West Region, said.
Another key highlight for the group was the support and knowledge-sharing from the team. The culture at Monadelphous made a big impression, particularly with experienced engineers always willing to guide and involve them.
“Monadelphous has a very immersive culture where experienced team members take the time and really strive to make you feel welcome,” Cayden, who worked on the Electrical and Instrumentation team, said.
The program also reinforced the importance of adaptability in engineering. Whether dealing with material delays, design issues, or unpredictable site conditions, learning how to adjust plans and find solutions was invaluable.
For those considering a vacation program, the students’ unanimous advice was simple—go for it.
“The lessons I have learned and the experience I have gained have been incredibly valuable, and I will take that with me for the rest of my career,” Zac, based in EC Projects, said.
With the program now wrapped up, we hope to see some of the students back at Monadelphous in the future and wish them all the best in their studies.
