Just like that we’ve moved into the second half the year, closed one financial year and opened another! As part of closing out a financial year we spend time reviewing the performance of the past year, and planning for the year ahead. In this update we’d like to take some extra time to recognise the whole team’s contribution over the last 12-months which delivered a great outcome that should hold us in good stead for 2022/23.

Before we get into the year’s highlights, we want to firstly give a special mention and appreciate the support networks that we have around us – family, friends, partners, teammates – the people that provide a support system that allow us all to do what we do.

The challenges of the past few years have been taken in our stride with long rosters, COVID restrictions, travel restrictions and a lot of uncertainty yet we have shown the resilience to deliver exceptional results and the support network has played a key role of which we sincerely acknowledge the support, and for this very important contribution, we sincerely thank you. 

 A snapshot of some of our achievements over the last 12-months:

  • SAFETY! We have reduced our (TRIFR) again over the past 12 months and our safety performance can only be described as world class. A great year in which we have seen a lot of new people enter the business and we have embedded our ‘safe way is the only way’ culture across our projects. As we are all aware, we can only maintain, or better these results, by constant reinforcement on a daily basis as well as being relentless in our strive for zero harm across our projects.
  • Tinny Time, the Engineering Construction division’s safety program, which recognises and celebrates the positive contributions of our people, has seen many of our Mining and Minerals team nominated for awards
  • Structural changes were made in our Mining and Minerals portfolio, which has seen the east coast team formally within the Resources East business unit join Brett’s national projects team. We welcome you all to the wider Mining Minerals portfolios
  • Gudai-Darri achieved first ore and the mine was officially opened in June 2022. Despite not being involved in the project from the outset, we were called upon during the construction phase in July 2021 to provide additional support to Rio, after successful delivery of the West Angeles Deposits C&D project. Mobilising 50 people initially on site, further requests to mobilise additional resources and securing more scope saw our team peak at more than 600, a true testament to the positive impact of our people and their performance during the project
  • The Smelter Campaign Maintenance 2021 (SCM21) was the largest and most complex shutdown campaign to be undertaken at BHP’s Olympic Dam mine site in its 32 years of operation, with such a tight labour market and COVID restrictions our multi-disciplined team were able to deliver a safe and successful outcome and received very positive feedback from our customer on what was the most critical program of works in the last four years for Olympic Dam
  • Through our Mondium joint venture, Western Turner Syncline 2 was delivered for Rio Tinto, the mine has been producing ore since late 2021 and our team has been providing ongoing support to the project. Mondium also demonstrated the strength of our integrated model, safely and successfully delivering the Greenbushes tailings retreatment plant project for Talison Lithium in the south-west of WA
  • At Albemarle’s Kemerton Lithium Plant (KLP), we safely completed our SMP works on both trains 1 and 2 whilst maintaining a good productivity factor above one, we have also developed strong relationships with our performance on site that has resulted in our E&I team securing a package of work, which due to our positive impact was recently expanded, and will see the team on site for a few more months
  • We delivered the Port Availability Improvement Project (PAIP) for BHP in Hedland alongside the Maintenance team, successfully delivering on or ahead of time 31 shutdowns over the course of the project.
  • The Jimblebar surplus water project was delivered for BHP as a complete vertical package in which we carried out all commissioning activities ourselves and handed then project back to BHP ready to utilise
  • Following completion of the original South Flank inflow scope our team has remained on site to support works across the South Flank packages which has gradually expanded in numbers with a shutdown planned for mid-July requiring circa 120 resources, another prime example of our teams’ performance, skillset and reliability
  • In May in a 10-day window we were able to deliver three shutdowns on or ahead of schedule on three different projects in a tight labour market, and more importantly without incident or injury. An exceptional effort by the Western Turner Syncline 2 (WTS2), South Flank Inflow and Tom Price teams
  • We were awarded a multi-disciplinary construction contract and the provision of shutdown works with Rio Tinto in the Tom Price area. We commenced these works in May, delivering shutdown services successfully in June 2022 with further works to continue into this new financial year with a large multi-disciplined shutdown planned for August 2022 requiring circa 300 resources for the 28-day shutdown
  • In New South Wales, the team secured a multidisciplinary construction services contract with Tronox Mining Australia in Broken Hill, works have commenced and are progressing well
  • It’s important that we support the communities where we operate, work towards reconciliation, provide a safe and inclusive working environment and leave a positive legacy. With these aims in mind, during the year we proudly invested in many local community initiatives and events, volunteered within the community to support Perth homelessness and supported many diversity and inclusion programs – in the year ahead we will see an increased focus in regard to our social impact and how we can have a more positive impact in such a key area.
  • Monadelphous celebrates turning 50! 2022 marks Monadelphous’ 50th year of operation and we’ll be celebrating the achievement and the important role you’ve all played in our history – stay tuned

Pleasingly, our Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan 2022-2025 was launched in line with NAIDOC week. We’ll be celebrating with a series of activities and events from Sunday 3 to Sunday 10 July 2022. In this newsletter we look at the engagement initiatives recently held to engage local Indigenous people in meaningful work with us.

We appreciate all the hard work over the last year, we’re looking forward to capitalising on the number of opportunities on the horizon in the Australian resources sector and doing what we do best – delivering what we promise!
