Hannah is an Engineering student at UWA, currently studying for her Masters of Professional Engineering. Hannah recently had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as part of the Monadelphous vacation program 2022/23 working in the South West region.

Hannah’s introduction to Monadelphous began through the Girls in Engineering program, which Monadelphous proudly sponsors. During Hannah’s time in our vacation program, she presented to schools in the South West region about careers in STEM with the Girls in Engineering team.

How did you find out about the Monadelphous vacation program and why did you decide to apply?

Although I had heard about Monadelphous before, it was only after a site visit to the Karratha workshop with Girls in Engineering in 2022 that I began considering it as somewhere I might be interested in working. Getting to hear from the engineers on site about what project engineering/management actually involved was pretty cool and I decided I would like to try working in a site-based role prior to graduating.

How did you find the vacation program?

I had such a great time. Everyone on site was so welcoming and helpful, I never felt like a burden and got to ask so many questions. I also felt like my contributions were valued and that my work was actually important for the project. I think my experience was heavily influenced by having such awesome mentors David Chapple and Afsoon Zanjani on site with me, who really helped me not only learn a lot but enjoy my time there.

How have you found the company culture and working environment?

I really enjoyed working on site, everyone from the project manager to the trade assistants were so friendly, it was a great environment both whilst working on site or back at the camp accommodation. The office environment was really collaborative, and I was able to learn a little bit from basically everyone as opposed to only learning purely about E&I, which was pretty cool.

How do you feel about the development and growth opportunities available through the program?

It was a great opportunity to see what working at Monadelphous is like, crammed into only 12 weeks. I think it would be pretty hard to fit any more meaningful experience within the short time period, so trying out different teams or departments would be cool but likely detrimental to the amount you can learn.

It was awesome to talk with some of the graduate students and learn about the graduate program as a future pathway, and I feel like I have a greater understanding of not only Monadelphous but the industry as well now that I have completed this program.
