Safety conversations made simple

Across our sites and offices, JHAs are a key part of how we plan and carry out work safely, especially in high-risk construction environments. We usually complete them in writing, but we all know the paper-based approach can have its challenges. In fast paced or constantly changing jobs, stopping to fill out forms isn’t always practical, and it doesn’t always capture the full safety conversation happening on the ground.

Our EC Division have been trialling a new app called RiskTalk, a voice-activated tool that allows people to talk through their JHA job instead of writing everything down. The idea is simple: encourage good quality safety conversations at the job front, in real time, with the whole team involved.

RiskTalk is a mobile and tablet-based app that uses natural spoken language to complete safety documentation. Instead of writing out a JHA, workers talk through what the job involves, what could go wrong, and what needs to be in place to stay safe. The app captures and structures that information automatically and handles different accents and languages – a big help across our varied teams and worksites.

“We had excellent feedback from our teams who used an earlier version of RiskTalk,” EC HSE Manager, Josh Reid said.

“When listening back to a Risk Talk JHA, you could really hear the quality of conversation and full team involvement. We are very interested in the latest version, which includes an AI coaching tool and improved functionality.”

The RiskTalk trials are part of our ongoing commitment to improving how we capture safety information, reducing paperwork, and strengthening our ability to learn from the work our people do every day.

Trials are currently underway across four Monadelphous locations with plans to expand these further through to the end of April:

  • Fortescue North Star Junction BESS
  • Fortescue Solomon and Eliwana
  • PMAX
  • MMS Bunbury Workshop

These locations give us a mix of work types and environments, helping us see how the technology performs across different crews and conditions. If you’re part of a trial site, we thank you for your involvement and feedback. If not, stay tuned as more updates will be shared along the way.
