Meet Jim

Meet Jim Morris – Jim has been with Monadelphous for more than 15 years and has had many achievements across his diverse roles within the business. 

In the latest twist in his journey, Jim has transitioned back to the Energy team as a Senior Project Manager.  

"It was great to be offered this new opportunity, assisting the team in the innovations and continuous improvement space, while providing operational support across the whole of the Energy business,” Jim said. 

"I view this as a great personal challenge and one I’m excited to getting started on, but most of all, I’m looking forward to just meeting new people and providing support wherever it is needed, until I’m given my next project or challenge." 

He started with Monadelphous in 2008 as a Project Manager managing the FMG Maintenance Services contract at Cloudbreak. His tenacity and skillset quickly propelled him into roles where he was overseeing shutdowns and brownfields projects for industry heavyweights like Pilbara Iron, Rio Tinto, and BHP. 

In 2015, Jim took on the Projects Construction - Project Manager role at the Kwinana Oil Refinery. His leadership shone, as well as the team’s capabilities under his stewardship, during the successful 2017 major turnaround.  

After steering the transition of the INPEX offshore maintenance services contract, Jim found himself unexpectedly back in his hometown of Kalgoorlie. As an Area Operations Manager within the Mining and Minerals Southern Region business, he oversaw multiple maintenance services contracts and major projects across 24 sites and 14 client organisations throughout the Goldfields region. 

In pursuit of becoming a professional football player, he had left Kalgoorlie at 19 to play football for West Perth Football Club, but the move Perth opened his eyes to another world of opportunity, far away from football.  

"I was doing my apprenticeship at Western Mining Corporation (now BHP Nickel West) as a boilermaker before heading to Perth and, like many young lads, was hoping to play sport for a living instead of having to 'really' work for a living," Jim said. 

"It just happened that I was presented an opportunity to play football back in the country and ended up in Boddington, where I commenced my trade in earnest working at the Boddington Gold Mine. 

“It was here where I was offered to pursue a second trade as a Mechanical Fitter, or as Jamie Burgess calls it, a 'Washer Squasher', and further expand on my skillsets and trade knowledge.” 

In his personal life, Jim is an avid lover of the ocean and mad about all sports. He grew up with a passion for horse racing and now having a stable of horses gives him an excuse to hang out with mates on most weekends. 

One of his favourite parts of working in the resources industry and for Monadelphous is the culture, which he describes as a space where "selfless attitudes and motivations for team success" prevail, making it much more than just a workplace. 

"Opportunities are endless; if you have ambitions, are driven, and set yourself some goals, then you can achieve almost anything you want. At the very least, it will allow you to grow, learn, and hopefully travel while you gain experience," he said. 

"At Monos, you really get the opportunity to challenge yourself and get as much as possible out of your own knowledge and experience. 

"You are also able to share this with others and to learn from others, as everyone always has something to offer." 

As Jim looks ahead, he is focused on his tasks within the Energy team and said he is aiming to work hard, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to the wider success of the team and Monadelphous.
