Michelin star mud

There is something delightfully chaotic about a group of kids turning dirt, leaves and water into a five-star imaginary feast, and thanks to support from Monadelphous, more Darwin children are getting the chance to do exactly that.

The Darwin Men's Shed has delivered five handcrafted mud kitchens to local schools and care organisations with help from the Monadelphous Community Grant Program, giving more than 100 children a new way to explore creativity, outdoor play and hands-on learning.

For the Darwin Men’s Shed, the project started with a simple problem. Plenty of schools and not-for-profit groups loved the idea of mud kitchens, but many could not afford to build one.

Treasurer Kerry Grace said the Shed had been building around six mud kitchens a year for schools, childcare centres and families, but there were always organisations that had to miss out.

“It was disappointing for the men to know there was a need in the community that they could not always meet,” Kerry said.

“The Monadelphous grant changed that. It allowed approximately eight Shed members to use their skills, workshop facilities and teamwork to build and deliver five mud kitchens for local children and educators.”

Using recycled pallet timber, recycled basins, and salvaged plumbing parts where possible, around eight Shed members worked together to build the kitchens while making sure they remained safe, durable, and suitable for young children.

The project also came with a fun extra challenge. To recognise Monadelphous’ support, each mud kitchen features a custom plaque in the company’s signature red and white branding.

The feedback from educators has reinforced that these mud kitchens are more than just play equipment; they are practical learning tools that support child development.
